Modern Farmhouse: Kitchen

My clients biggest request for this renovation was to have a large kitchen with a 48” range and a huge center island.  By removing the non-working fireplace and knocking down the wall between the kitchen and the “den,” we were able to really open up the space.  We relocated the basement entrance from the kitchen to the foyer, which allowed us to fit a long run of cabinetry, a panty and the gorgeous wolf range.

Working with Parsons Cabinetry, we came up with a fantastic layout that created ample counter space and a nice flow for the chef. We maximized storage by taking the uppers all the way to the ceiling and adding drawers on the side of the island. We even added a large cabinet in front of stools for all those serving dishes she rarely uses.  Since the family will primarily be using the back door to come and go, we designed tall cabinets to handle jackets, backpacks and shoes.

I love how the dark blue island looks against the bright white cabinetry. Benjamin Moore’s Hidden Sapphire makes its second appearance in this home (see the blog post on the exterior). Mixing finishes, we selected simple yet large cabinet pulls in aged brass and oil rubbed bronze  to bring the farmhouse vibe into the kitchen, and used them on both the cabinets and the drawers.  The deck mount bridge kitchen faucet adds the smidge of traditional flair in polished nickel.  Two Hicks Pendants nicely tie together our mixing of metals.

One of my favorite elements of this house is easily missed in all the fun details. We created custom trim and molding around all the windows, doors, baseboards and ceilings.  I wanted the trim to be bold but simple.  Using the Metro Collection by Garden State Lumber, I was able to create a simple farmhouse trim with just a little bit of curve at the crown.  Parsons expertly mimicked it along the cabinetry and the hood.  They did such an amazing job of bringing my vision to life.
