our story

It’s a common story in town: young family living in Brooklyn; has one kid, then another, and finds the apartment they once loved a little too close for comfort.  The family needs more space but the city is out of reach.  They embark on the home buying circuit and land in a little town in northern New Jersey.  Just 11 miles from the city, Montclair is a unique combination of walkable neighborhoods, great restaurants, locals shops and a direct train to Manhattan.  There are a ton of beautiful old homes with great character but many feel outdated for the modern family.  

Smith Home Studios was born out of this shared experience.  I love old homes but the layout doesn’t typically meet the needs of a young family.  We want to gather in the kitchen and hang in the living room.  We want our own ensuite and a separate place for the kids to play.  We want to be together but we also want our space.

Older homes in Montclair don’t typically provide this lifestyle. You find instead tiny kitchens, disconnected rooms, and a single bathroom on the second floor.  However, with a little vision and the right contractors, any house can be transformed into the perfect home.  The largest hurdle? Busy families with small kids rarely have the time to make this a reality.
